Why You Need to Watch Maleficent:Mistress of Evil

Need a recap on the first movie?

Maleficent, a young powerful fairy, is deep in love with Stefan, a human boy. However, as time passes by, the two grow apart and Maleficent becomes the protector of the Moors, the kingdom of fairies. When King Henry of Ulstead - the kingdom of humans - sets out to conquer the Moors and promises that anyone who kills Maleficent will be married to the princess, Stefan is the one to step up. Although he can’t bring himself to kill her, Stefan severs her wings and presents them to the king. Devastated by his betrayal, Maleficent turns her back against humans. But everything changes when she meets Aurora, the daughter of Stefan, whom she had put a curse upon, a curse that can only be broken by a true love’s kiss. Soon Maleficent grows to love Aurora, despite the fact that she is a human girl. At the end, it isn’t Prince Philip, her lover, but Maleficent’s motherly love that wakes Aurora up from her sleep.

Setting The Scene...

Prince Philip’s proposes to Aurora, and Aurora is soon filled with hopes to unite the two kingdoms. Hearing the news, Maleficent opposes, saying that she isn’t and never will be welcomed by humans. Eventually, she agrees to visit the castle of Ulstead. Rather expectedly, she meets Aurora’s future mother-in-law, Queen Ingrith, whom she discovers to be full of deceitful plans to ultimately destroy the Moors. Meanwhile, Maleficent also has to deal with a newly discovered truth about her ancestry that forces her to fight the queen. The question remains, can peace ever be achieved between humans and fairies?

“ICONIC HEROINES”

Let’s all just be honest for a second. Who in the world does not love a movie that features three of the most iconic, strong female characters? Sit back, grab a cup of tea, and allow yourself to fall in love with these amazing heroines. Be sure to check them out in the theatre - trust me, you don’t want to miss any of them!

Aurora

Yes, at times, Aurora might seem like a vulnerable, soft, hopeless romantic - but that’s exactly what makes her a strong woman. She cares about people that she loves. Sacrifices herself for the good of the society. Uses her kindness to help others remember who they truly are. After all, she is no longer the 14-year old girl that gets miraculously saved by a handsome prince in the 1959 film. In this movie, she is the one that holds the key to bringing peace between the two kingdoms. Aurora is a character that reminds us all how we don’t have to wield a gun to be considered a heroine. Instead, she’s telling us, “Pursue what you think is right and don’t ever be afraid to do what nobody has done before. That’s all it takes.”

Queen Ingrith

Queen Ingrith is a fierce, ambitious woman who is willing to get rid of anyone who gets in the way of achieving her goal. If you are imagining her to be the one to submit to her husband, you couldn’t be more wrong. She’s not like any other queen - you will find her in the most beautiful dress you’ve ever seen, shooting an arrow. Although at first, she might seem like the worst villain, you will soon learn to realize why she ended up that way. In the end, regardless of right or wrong, it’s quite refreshing to see a female character with the guts and will to stand against what the rest of the society tells and expects her to do.

Maleficent

Maleficent is a fairy, well-known for her ability to put curses upon anyone, and anything she wants; not only that, power can easily destroy an entire kingdom. However, her true strength lies not in her bones, but in her heart. Despite the many reasons to turn her back against humans, she constantly chooses to see the good in them, to use her power not as a way to destroy them, but to live with them. Such personalities play an important role in this movie, as Maleficent faces a challenge where she must find a way to both protect her daughter, and her own blood. Will she succeed? Watch the movie to find out!
